Unaccustomed Earth: When Choosing Yourself Means Turning Your Life Upside Down

“I’ve been sleepwalking through my life for years. I finally woke up.”

That line from Netflix’s trailer for Unaccustomed Earth captures the dilemma at the heart of the upcoming drama. Sometimes, the life we have carefully built is not the life we truly want. But what happens when recognising that means risking everything around us?

The Dreams We Leave Behind

Starring Freida Pinto as Parul Chaudhury, the eight-episode series follows a woman who returns to Cambridge, Massachusetts, after five years in Mumbai. Devoted to her family, Parul appears to have a settled life. Yet beneath that picture lies a choice she made years earlier: giving up her college first love, Amit Mukherjee (Siddharth), to honour her father’s wishes.

A life-changing cancer diagnosis forces her to confront the future she once set aside. As old feelings resurface, Parul begins questioning the decisions that brought her here.

When Choosing Yourself Has Consequences

The series does not appear to offer an easy story of liberation. Parul’s choices affect her husband Jai, Amit’s present relationship and the close-knit Indian-American Bengali community around them. That’s what makes the premise interesting. Wanting something different does not automatically make every decision right, nor does following your heart erase the people who may be hurt along the way.

The question, as Pinto has put it, is how far someone would go to live the dream they really want — and whether they are ready for the consequences.

A Story That Reaches Beyond Borders

Inspired by Jhumpa Lahiri’s acclaimed short-story collection, Unaccustomed Earth explores love, family, belonging, longing and the lives people imagine they might have led.

Its Cambridge setting and interconnected Bengali-American community give the drama a distinct cultural backdrop. But its central dilemma is more universal: how do we know when we have stopped living for ourselves?

When Does Unaccustomed Earth Premiere?

All eight episodes of Unaccustomed Earth arrive on Netflix on December 17, 2026.

The Glam Feed Take

The most compelling part of Parul’s story may not be whether she gets the life she once wanted. It is whether she can face what that choice will cost.
