Freida Pinto and Siddharth headline Netflix’s adaptation of Jhumpa Lahiri’s acclaimed stories, exploring the dreams we abandon, the lives we build for others and the difficult decision to put ourselves first.
The Dreams We Leave Behind
Growing up often means making compromises. We choose stability over uncertainty, responsibility over ambition and sometimes the life our families envision over the one we secretly want.
But what happens when those decisions begin to feel like someone else’s life?
That’s the emotional territory of Unaccustomed Earth, Netflix’s upcoming drama inspired by Jhumpa Lahiri’s celebrated short-story collection.
When a Good Life Isn’t Enough
Freida Pinto plays Parul Chaudhury, a wife and mother who returns to Cambridge, Massachusetts, after five years in Mumbai.
Her return brings her face-to-face with Amit Mukherjee (Siddharth), her college love whom she gave up to honour her father’s wishes. Now married to Jai and raising a family, Parul finds herself confronting a past she never entirely left behind.
A life-changing health diagnosis further complicates her journey, pushing her to reconsider the choices she has made and the future she still wants.
The Courage to Reconsider Your Choices
What makes Parul’s story interesting is that her marriage isn’t presented as a simple tale of oppression or unhappiness.
Jai has supported her ambitions and made sacrifices of his own. Yet Parul continues to struggle with the feeling that something essential is missing.
It raises an uncomfortable question: can you appreciate the life you’ve built while still wanting something different?
Choosing Yourself Comes at a Cost
Personal fulfilment doesn’t happen in isolation. Parul’s decisions affect her husband, son, former love and the wider Bengali-American community around her.
The series appears willing to explore the uncomfortable consequences of pursuing an old dream, particularly when other people have built their own lives around the choices you’ve made.
Perhaps that’s its most compelling idea: choosing yourself doesn’t necessarily mean you’re right, but it does mean acknowledging that your own happiness matters.

A Story That Goes Beyond Borders
Although rooted in a Bengali-American community, Unaccustomed Earth explores emotions that extend beyond geography.
Family expectations, cultural identity, sacrifice and the pressure to fulfil other people’s ideas of a successful life are experiences that can resonate across generations and countries.
With Madhuri Shekar serving as showrunner and The Lunchbox director Ritesh Batra directing the first two episodes, the adaptation brings together an interesting creative team. Jhumpa Lahiri also serves as an executive producer.
When Does Unaccustomed Earth Premiere?
The eight-episode series arrives on Netflix on December 17, 2026, with Freida Pinto and Siddharth leading an ensemble that includes Indraneil Sengupta, Sarayu Blue, Parveen Kaur and Jayant Kripalani.
The Glam Feed Take
You can spend years building a life everyone believes you should be grateful for, only to realise that you’ve left a part of yourself behind.
That’s the question Unaccustomed Earth invites us to consider. Choosing yourself doesn’t always lead to an uncomplicated happy ending, and it certainly doesn’t erase the people who might get hurt along the way.
But perhaps there’s a difference between being grateful for the life you have and accepting that it’s the only life you’re allowed to want.
Sometimes, the hardest decision isn’t leaving everything behind. It’s admitting what you’ve been missing all along.
