A decade after Ventilator brought a Marathi family drama into the spotlight, Priyanka Chopra Jonas is returning to the film that became an important milestone in her journey as a producer. The actor-producer has officially announced Ventilator 2, reuniting with filmmaker Rajesh Mapuskar, who will return as both writer and director.
Scheduled for a 2027 release, the sequel will be produced by Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Dr Madhu Chopra and Mapuskar under Purple Pebble Pictures and Magij Pictures. Details about the cast and storyline have not yet been revealed.
A Marathi film that made a national impression
Released in 2016, Ventilator followed the Kamerkar family as its members gathered at a hospital after an elderly relative was placed on a ventilator shortly before Ganesh Chaturthi. Blending humour with an emotionally grounded exploration of family relationships, generational differences and unresolved tensions, the film found its strength in an everyday family situation.
The ensemble featured Ashutosh Gowariker, Jitendra Joshi, Sulabha Arya, Viju Khote, Satish Alekar and Achyut Potdar, with Priyanka also making a special appearance.
The film went on to win three National Film Awards: Best Director for Mapuskar, Best Editing and Best Sound Mixing.
Returning to a meaningful chapter
For Priyanka, the announcement carries significance beyond the return of a successful film. Ventilator was among the projects that helped establish Purple Pebble Pictures’ identity as a production banner interested in stories rooted in different Indian languages and experiences.
Reflecting on the original film, Priyanka described it as one of the stories the company had wanted to tell when it began its journey. A decade later, the reunion with Mapuskar brings that chapter back into focus.
With the sequel’s narrative and cast still under wraps, what Ventilator 2 will explore remains unknown. For now, its announcement marks a return to a Marathi production that helped shape an important part of Priyanka’s filmmaking journey.
